When one of my clients told me her sister fractured her back doing rollover during a Pilates class, I was disturbed. Though the instructor knew there was a diagnosis of osteoporosis, she was not aware of the movement contraindications for her client. This woman experienced a vertebral fracture that was totally preventable.
The statistics are out there, and they’re scary. 70% of people with osteoporosis or osteopenia are undiagnosed. They don’t even know they have it and many of them are probably in your classes. We, as Pilates instructors, need to be fully informed, not only about what is contraindicated, but what we can proactively do to help this growing population stay healthy, strong and fracture-free.
I’ve always been drawn to seniors – early on as a volunteer candy striper at old age homes and now as a Pilates instructor. I find myself drawn to the mature client and the problem-solving involved to best meet their needs.
Pilates for osteoporosis, in particular, is an area I’ve been passionate about and which I enjoy teaching in my Healthy Bones classes at Stanford University as well as at my local Rec center. Unfortunately, our beloved Pilates technique, which can contribute so much when done correctly, can be a recipe for disaster for those with low bone density if not performed with appropriate modifications.
In my BoneSmart Pilates® Workshop, I approach movement for osteoporosis through the prism of Pilates, physical therapy and the joy of dance. You’ll learn how to assess someone’s fracture risk, how to interpret a bone density report and how to modify Pilates for this special population that needs it so desperately. You’ll learn exercises targeted to improve bone density on different Pilates equipment and we’ll review indicated and contraindicated Pilates Mat exercises and explore different props that support bone-healthy movement. I’ll also share my original “Osteoporosis Dance,” created to target balance, femoral neck bone building and fun!
This workshop will give you the confidence and tools to work with this growing population, safely and effectively. When used wisely, Pilates is a potent tool for this special group of people that I love working with.
I look forward to seeing you in my course!
